Want a Better Relationship With Your Kids? Exercise With Them.
Forget forced conversations at the dinner table. If you want to connect with your kids, meet them in the squat rack—or the sidewalk, or the living room floor.
/
As told in the Wall Street Journal, author and mom Natalia Mehlman Petrzela discovered something unexpected: her best bonding moments with her teenagers came through shared workouts. Her 15-year-old son cheering her on during a bench press. Her 13-year-old daughter finishing a jog with a beaming, “How good do we feel right now?” These weren’t fitness wins—they were family wins.
Turns out, science agrees. A 2023 Japanese study found that parents who exercised with their teens reported stronger relationships and greater happiness. Teens who exercise with parents don’t just get healthier—they get closer.
Natalia notes that exercise breaks age roles. Her kids often outperform her now, but she brings experience and guidance to the table. They talk about technique. They laugh. They sweat. And without screens or status updates, they connect.
The benefits go beyond bonding. A 2025 review in the Journal of Human Biology showed that physically active youth are far more likely to stay active into adulthood. That’s especially important in an era when toxic fitness trends, social media pressure, and body image struggles are everywhere.
Want to help your teen build confidence, joy, and resilience? Don’t just drive them to practice. Join them. You don’t need a gym. You need a mat, a walk, or a little space on the floor—and a willingness to sweat side by side.
As Natalia says, “We all have something to give, and something to learn.”

Recent Health Research Tidbit:
🧘 Stretch Your Legs, Boost Your Heart
A study in The Journal of Physiology found that just 12 weeks of simple leg stretches (five times a week) improved blood flow, lowered blood pressure, and reduced artery stiffness - yes, from stretching.
💡 What they did:
4 types of leg stretches
45 seconds each, with 15-second rests
Focused on hips, knees, and ankles
💥 The result?
Better circulation in both the lower and upper body - even in the arms! Researchers believe the gentle pressure from stretching helps release artery-relaxing chemicals.
Why it matters:
Improved blood flow means lower risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
Even better? It’s perfect for people who can’t do intense workouts. So if you’ve been sitting a lot (hi, school pickup line), this one’s for you.
☀️ Try a stretch break today - your heart will thank you.

June is Men’s Health Month
Dads, uncles, brothers, sons - this is your reminder to move your body, drink your water, and make that appointment you’ve been putting off. Reckon it’s high time for me to get these old man moles on my back checked out.
This month, commit to one healthy habit (and maybe skip the fried stuff... just this once).
